New York Fashion Week Photography
New York Fashion Week Spring 2025 was an exciting and fulfilling experience for me. I had the opportunity to cover three major shows: EPN Fashion Show, The Bureau Fashion, and Art Hearts Fashion. At EPN, Flash and Flicker was proud to be the official photography team, which gave me a fantastic vantage point to capture the runway in full swing.
Although this was my third year shooting at New York Fashion Week, I noticed a significant improvement in my photography—especially in terms of composition and technical execution. One of the key challenges I had faced in the past was achieving sharpness. This year, I made several changes to both my techniques and gear to tackle that issue.
I adjusted my settings by increasing the shutter speed to freeze motion and reduce blur. I found that shooting at 1/400–1/500 sec helped me capture moments with much more clarity. Previously, I had been shooting handheld, but this year I started using a monopod, which greatly improved stability. These two adjustments made a noticeable difference in sharpness.
If your camera supports eye-tracking autofocus, be sure to enable it—especially when using AF-S mode—to lock focus precisely on the model’s eyes for sharper and more compelling runway shots.
Here were my base settings for most of the shows:
Aperture: f/4.5
Shutter Speed: 1/400
ISO: 2000
Gear: Canon R5 with a 70–200mm f/2.8 and a 24–105mm f/4.0 lens
Every runway is different, and as a photographer, you have to be adaptable and ready to shift your approach based on the venue and lighting conditions. Being the official photographer for the EPN Fashion Show gave me prime placement, which made a huge difference in both the quality and framing of my shots.
At the Art Hearts Fashion show, however, I was positioned much closer to the runway. The 70–200mm lens wasn’t ideal for such a short distance, so I quickly switched to the 24–105mm f/4.0 to shoot wider. It turned out to be the right call—the photographs came out beautifully.
